ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University women's golf team fell a little short in its final event of the 2018-19 season with a five-point loss to Albion (Mich.) College in the Trine/Albion Cup hosted at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.
The Brittons went on to win the event by a final score of 16.5 points to 11.5 points in a match-play format. Each team composed of seven players with the possibility of winning a maximum of four points for the team. A point was awarded to the player with the lowest score per nine holes and then two points were awarded to the overall lowest score for 18-holes in the head-to-head matchup. A maximum of 28 points could have been awarded to the winning team.
"We would have loved to finish the year with a win in this trophy matchup versus Albion," said Head Coach Noah Warren. "Unfortunately we fell short, but I am super proud of our girls who battled a great Albion team."
Sophomore Olivia Phillips (Muncie, Ind./Muncie) captured a maximum four points in her individual match against Albion's Grace Hoffman posting the lowest score per nine holes and the lowest overall 18-hole score.
Junior Mackenna Kelly (Angola, Ind./Angola) and freshman Becca Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) both earned three points for the team in their individual matches. Both players earned a point for the lowest second nine hole score and then two points for defeating their opponents in the overall match.
Freshman Karlee Fackler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Heritage) captured a point in her match and fellow freshman Jenna Doumont (Burlington, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy) picked up a half point for posting the same score as her opponent for the second nine to round out the scoring for the Thunder.
"Two of the matches went to extra holes," added Warren. "Karlee won the front, lost the back, and found herself tied after 18. She fell just short on her 20th hole of the day. On the other hand, Becca made a clutch putt on the 18th hole to force extra holes. She was able to win her match on the 19th hole. I am extremely excited to have all seven of these girls returning next season, as we look forward to an improved and great 2019-20 season!"
