MEQUON, Wis. -- The Trine University women's hockey team struck first in the contest but would ultimately fall by the score of 4-2 to their hosts from Concordia University Wisconsin.
The Thunder received a power play opportunity in the opening minute of the contest and turned it into the opening goal of the day. Sophomore Grace Hicks (Layton, Utah) tallied the goal her third of the season. Sophomore Michelle Byker (Gurnee, Ill.) and junior Grace Canty (West Bloomfield, Mich.) added assists as the team took a 1-0 lead.
In the final seconds of the period the Falcons knotted the game up with a goal of their own. Then in the second period Concordia scored a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead into the final stanza.
The Thunder cut the lead to one in the tenth minute of the final period. This time Byker scored with assists going to senior Brandi Wilson (Fenton, Mich.) and junior Makena Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska).
The team would still trail by one with just over a minute remaining in the game, when they would pull goalie Ryleigh Furlong (Lakeville, Minn.) in favor of an extra forward. The Falcons caused a turnover and iced the game with their fourth goal handing the Thunder a 4-2 loss.
Furlong finished the game with 29 saves in goal despite allowing the trio of goals.
The Thunder fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play following the loss. They will look to bounce back when they host Adrian College on Friday, Nov. 19. That contest is set to start at 7 p.m.
