APPLETON, Wis. -- After a scoreless first period, the Trine University women's hockey team combined with their hosts from Lawrence University to score eight goals in the second period on the way to a 9-2 victory.
The game started pedestrianly with a scoreless first period, but that quickly changed in the second when in just the second minute of play freshman Kailey Mleko (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) came up with with the first goal of the day.
The Vikings knotted the contest at one in the sixth minute with a power play goal.
Over the course of the next seven minutes of play the Thunder would tally four goals building a 5-1 lead in the 14th minute of the period. During the stretch freshman Payton Hans (Johnson Creek, Wis.) and seniors Emily Moore (London, Ontario) and Brandi Wilson (Fenton, Mich.) each scored goals.
After a second Lawrence goal, Mleko bookended the period with her second goal of the night giving the team a 6-2 lead going into the second intermission.
The Thunder would score three unanswered goals in the final period to finish the game with the 9-2 win. Freshman Anabelle Scriver (Holt, Mich.) accounted for two goals while sophomore Michelle Byker (Gurnee, Ill.) adding the third.
Wilson led the team in the contest finishing the game with five points including two goals and three assists. Scriver and Mleko each finished with two goals.
In net, freshman Ryleigh Furlong (Lakeville, Minn.) finished the game with 14 saves and her seventh win of the season.
The team improves to 8-15-1 overall and 5-9-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play following the victory. They will finish off the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, February 19. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. ET.
