ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team turned in a decisive performance against visiting Anderson (Ind.) University, sending the Ravens home with a 4-0 loss. Four different members of the Thunder tallied a goal as the team boasted a balanced offensive attack.
The two teams played to a frantic stalemate over the first 30 minutes of play, with possession switching back and forth in the middle of the field. The dams finally broke in the 31st minute of the contest. Freshman Anissa Rios (Chandler, Ariz. / Corona del Sol) passed the ball up the right side to start the play where a streaking Teresa Ashbrook (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) took the ball deep into the penalty area, before firing a shot across the net. The goal was Ashbrook's sixth, having scored in each of the team's first four contests.
The Thunder would add another goal 13 minutes later. This time freshman Bella Mabry (Oregon, Ohio / Clay) received the ball just outside the top of the penalty area. She would make one defender miss before firing a shot from just inside the penalty area into the right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
The 2-0 lead would last into the intermission. The second half would see Trine take full command of the game, dominating time of possession with 60% and adding 14 shots (seven on goal) to Anderson's three.
The third Thunder goal came in the 69th minute. This time freshman Mia Augustino (Niagara Falls, N.Y. / Niagara Falls) tallied the goal. She recieved the ball outside the penalty area and dribbled past a defender before firing her shot, still well outside the penalty area. She would strike true putting the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
Just four minutes later the team would finish the scoring in the contest. Freshman Paige Skaff (Plymouth, Mich. / Salem) worked her way past multiple defenders getting to the right side fo the penalty area. She proceeded to fire a shot inside where senior Julia Surratt (Madison Heights, Mich. / Marion) was able to finish the play for the team's fourth goal, securing the 4-0 victory.
Trine improves to 3-0-1 following the win. They will take the field again when they travel to face Medaille College at the Buffalo State Tournament. the contest is set to start at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11.
