OLIVET, Mich. – The Trine University women's soccer team secured a spot in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament with a win in their regular season finale against The University of Olivet. The Thunder won the match 2-0, their eighth shutout of the season.
Trine tallied the first shot of the contest in the fourth minute, when Bella Mabry pushed a shot just wide of the net.
The Comets ended up with the first shot on goal of the contest two minutes later, forcing the first save for Madison Kinneer who received the start in net for the Thunder. Sophomore Jordan Danna recorded the first shot on goal for Trine in the tenth minute of play.
The Thunder tallied back-to-back goals in the 14th and 15th minutes to secure their lead and the win. The first goal came from senior Olivia Butterworth, her second of the season. Mabry set up the goal with a corner kick that landed in the keeper's area bouncing off multiple Olivet defenders. Butterworth was able to settle the loose ball and score the goal.
For the second goal, Danna carried the ball into the corner before crossing back across the face of the net. Sofia Delgado caught the pass on her chest before firing a spinning kick that sent the ball into the net.
Neither team scored through the rest of the contest, but both would force saves. Kinneer ended the contest with four saves, three coming in the second half. Trine put four more shots on goal, to end the day with seven shots on goal.
The Thunder finish the regular season with a 7-6-5 overall record having gone 3-4-1 in MIAA play. Can finish either fifth or sixth in the conference standings, depending on results from later tonight. They will travel to face either Kalamazoo College or Adrian College in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament which is scheduled for Saturday, October 28.
