NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team came up just short of a spring opening win as they fell to Saint Mary's College 5-4.
The Thunder fell behind early in the doubles portion of the contest, picking up just one win. The No. 1 team of juniors Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) cruised to an 8-1 victory.
Trine was unable to mount a comeback in the singles portion as they split the matches with the Belles to finish with the 5-4 final score. Spirrison finished off the undefeated day with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 1 match while Cole did the same with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory in the No. 4 match. Junior Camille Lozier (Elkhart, Ind. / Concord) picked up the other point for the team with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 6 singles match.
The Thunder fall to 7-1 overall following the loss. They will compete again tomorrow, Sunday, March 21 when they travel to face Albion College. The match is set to start at 10 a.m.
