GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Trine University women's tennis team secured a spot in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women's tennis tournament with a 6-3 victory over Calvin University.
The Thunder took two of the doubles matches to begin the contest with a 2-1 lead. Juniors Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) took the No. 1 match by the score of 8-5. Seniors Andrea Jordan (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) and Trista Savage (Bryan, Ohio / Bryan) came up with the other win in the No. 3 match by the score of 8-3.
The team then finished off the victory with four more wins during the singles portion of the dual. Spirrison came up with a lopsided victory in the No. 1 match 6-1, 6-0, and junior Camille Lozier (Elkhart, Ind. / Concord) came up with a safe 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 6 match.
With the dual score set at 4-3, Trine had to work for their final point to secure the win. That point would ultimately come in the No. 4 singles match where Cole dropped the first set before taking the second two to secure a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. Savage followed up by securing the No. 5 match with scores of 5-7, 7-6, 10-7.
The Thunder improve to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in MIAA play. The team currently sits third in the standings and is set to enter the MIAA tournament as the three-seed. Final pairings are yet to be determined for the tournament.
