ALMA, Mich. – The Trine University women's tennis team was challenged during the doubles portion of the contest but came away with a 7-2 victory over Alma College in the third Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) match of the season.
The biggest battles of the day both came in the doubles portion of the day with the Thunder coming out on top of two of those matches. Seniors Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Ellie Cole (Albion, Ind. / Central Noble) made quick work of the No. 1 matches with an 8-1 victory. In the No. 2 match sophomore Jadyn Davis (Angola, Ind. / Angola) and freshman Bekah Trent (Harrodsburg, Kent. / Mercer County Sr.) had to battle for their win, needing a super tiebreaker to finish it off with an 8-7 (11-9) score.
The four members of the winning doubles teams would go on to be undefeated in the dual and led the way for the 7-2 victory. Spirrison in the No. 1 match and Trent in the No. 3 match would both win in straight points. Davis won the No. 2 match 6-4, 6-4 and Cole came up with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 5 match.
The final win came for junior Eva Morales (Angola, Ind. / Angola) who took the No. 4 match 6-0, 6-1.
The team improves to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. They will next take the courts when they travel to face Saint Mary's College on Tuesday, April 5. That dual is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
