North Manchester, Ind. -- The Trine University women's tennis team started the season on a high note defeating their hosts from Manchester University by the score 6-3.
The doubles portion of the contest saw the Thunder build a 2-1 lead. The first victory of the day came in the No. 2 match where the team of freshmen Alexis Maloney and Emilee Bassett came up with an 8-3 victory, also the first of their collegiate career. Then in the No. 3 match freshman Elina Locane and sophomore Lizzie Welker would take a hardfought 8-6 win.
Locane finished the day undefeated for the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 3 singles match with senior Bailey Pelliccia winning the No. 6 match with the same score. Bassett took the No. 4 match 6-0, 6-1 and then Maloney picked up the team's last win in the No. 5 match with the score of 6-1, 6-1.
The team will continue their season when they travel to Franklin, Ind. on Saturday, September 10. Trine will faceoff in a doubleheader against host Franklin College at 10 a.m. and fellow visitor Webster University at 2 p.m.
