ANGOLA, Ind. – The dual came down to the final two matches of the contest, but the Trine University women's tennis team came up just short against visiting St. Mary's College by the score of 6-3.
The Belles took the lead during the doubles portion of the contest winning two of the three matches. Freshmen Emilee Bassett and Alexis Maloney would secure the lone win for the Thunder in the No. 2 match. There they came up with a victory by the score of 8-4.
Bassett became the lone member of the team to go undefeated in the match by winning the No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-2. Senior Eva Morales picked up her first win of the day in the No. 1 match when her opponent retired with the score 5-1 in the first set, in favor of Morales.
After St. Mary's picked up wins in the No. 2 and No. 6 matches, the dual came down to the final two singles contests. Both Maloney in the No. 5 match and classmate Elina Locane in the No. 3 match forced third sets to give the team a chance. Maloney won the second set to force the third before ultimately falling 2-6, 6-0, 3-6 and Locane won the first set before falling with scores of 6-4, 4-6, 1-6.
Trine falls to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play following the loss. They will continue their season by hosting Calvin University on Saturday, April 15. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
