ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team opened their season with a lopsided victory over visiting Earlham College. They came out on top by the score of 7-2.
The Thunder picked up a commanding lead in the first portion of the contest winning all three of the doubles matches. The No. 1 team of sophomores Elina Locane and Alexis Maloney turned in the quickest and most decisive of the wins defeating their opponents 8-1. Sophomore Emilee Bassett and freshman Haley Straub followed up in the No. 2 match with an 8-4 win. Juniors Lizzie Welker and Kennedy Outwater won the final match 8-6.
The top two matches went to the Quakers in the singles portions of the dual, but Trine secured the day with wins in the final four matches. Maloney was the quickest member of the team to go undefeated on the day winning the No. 3 match in straight games, 6-0, 6-0. Straub needed just a bit more time winning the No. 4 match 6-0, 6-1. Outwater and Welker finished off the day in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches respectively, Outwater by the score of 6-4, 6-1 and Welker 6-2, 6-3.
The Thunder will continue their season when they travel to face Manchester University on Tuesday, September 5. That match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
