FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team split a pair of dual matches hosted by Franklin College. They defeated their hosts 9-0 before dropping a neutral site match against Webster University by the score of 7-2.
The Grizzlies were shorthanded for the day, handing the Thunder their first victory by default in the No. 3 doubles match. Sophomores Elina Locane and Alexis Maloney won the No. 1 match 8-3 and the No. 2 team of Emilee Bassett and Haley Straub won 8-2.
Trine received another win by default in the No. 6 singles match before winning the other five matches on the court. The closest contest of the day came in the No. 4 match where Straub needed a comeback and a tiebreaker to get the win with scores of 4-6, 6-2, 1-0. Bassett also faced a tighter match winning the No. 2 contest 6-2, 7-5. Locane in the No. 1 (6-1, 6-0) and Maloney in the No. 3 (6-0, 6-1) each won convincingly. Junior Kennedy Outwater finished the No. 5 match with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
The second dual of the day went wrong from the start, with the Gorloks winning all three of the doubles matches. The Thunder scored their two team points with singles wins by Bassett and Straub. Bassett took the No. 2 match with scores of 6-3, 6-1. Straub needed another comeback to win her match taking the No. 4 contest 5-7, 6-4, 1-0.
The Thunder finish the day with a 3-1 overall record. Individuals from the team will next compete when they travel to the Hope College Invite which is scheduled to be contested beginning on Friday, September 15.
