ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team dropped just one set to their hosts from Concordia University Ann Arbor, taking the contest 3-1.
The two teams found started the contest with a battle in the first set playing to a 7-6 score with the Thunder holding a slight lead. From there Trine opened up the floodgates taking the next seven points to build the lead to 14-6. The teams traded points through the rest of the set until the Thunder reached 24 points, then the Cardinals took four straight points of their own before Trine could finish off the set at 25-20.
The Thunder built on the momentum in the second set building an early 7-2 lead. The two teams would trade points with Concordia slowly cutting into the lead until a 6-1 run got them within one at 20-19. Trine was able to hold off the charge and come away with the 25-23 win.
The third set started in back-and-forth fashion until the Cardinals found a groove and went on a 10-2 run to take a 14-9 lead. Another 9-2 run later in the set put Concordia on the verge of a set victory at 24-15 and they tipped over that edge for the win with a score of 25-17.
The Thunder roared back to life in the fourth set going on an early 12-3 run to build a 13-7 lead in the contest. The Cardinals soared back into the set with their own11-2 run to take back the lead at 18-15. From there Trine put their noses to the grindstone and went 11-3 to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Three Thunder finished the contest with double-digit kill counts. Senior Madison Munger (Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central) led the way for the team with 20 kills while also coming in second with 24 digs in the contest. Sophomore Breanna Small (Indianapolis, Ind. / Beech Grove) turned in 13 kills of her own with a .216 hitting percentage.
Senior Sarah Toles (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) came in third with 12 kills on a .241 hitting percentage and led the way for the team with four total blocks. freshman Hannah Sands (Jonesville, Mich. / Jonesville) came up with eight kills a team-high .429 hitting percentage.
Senior Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) finished the contest with 25 digs to lead the team. Sophomore Joslynn Battle (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) led the way with 46 assists and three service aces.
Trine improves to 2-0 following the victory. They will travel to face Adrian College tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 4. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
