ERIE, Pa. – A pair of grapplers qualified for nationals with podium finishes at the NCWWC Region III tournament today as the contingency from Trine University women's wrestling made the trip.
Riley Morrison was the first to stamp her ticket to nationals, finishing third in the 109 bracket. She started the day with a win before falling in the semifinals to head to the consolation bracket. Two more victories by pin and she had secured third in the class.
Madison Small joined her teammate with a third place finish of her own in the 136 bracket. She won by pin in the opening round before heading to the consolation bracket in the second. A pin and a 6-0 decision gave her third and qualified her for nationals.
Hailey Budney just missed on her own chance to continue the season. She notched two wins on the day before falling in the third-place match to finish fourth. A wrestle off was held to determine the final spot in nationals where Budney fell to just miss out.
Ashton Francis finished sixth at 191 while Michell Sanchez and Michaela Dykes both finished seventh.
Morrison and Small will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the national tournament beginning on Friday, March 8.
