ANGOLA, IND.-- The Trine women's lacrosse team was defeated by Hope, 20-10, on Senior Night at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.
With 17 saves, Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) became Trine's single-season leader in saves. The junior has stopped 170 shots this season, passing the previous record of 168 set by Emily Cardona in 2010. Garrett also reached the milestone of 100-career ground balls. Taylor Gast (Akron, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) and Anne Mammel (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) each scored three goals to lead the Thunder attack. Molly Greenfield scored five goals and added two assists to lead Hope. Katie Sabourin added four goals, while Olivia Keniath added three goals and an assist and Mackenzie Bortell notched two goals and two assists. Trine falls to 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the MIAA. Hope improved to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Trine was able to hang tough early. After the Flying Dutchmen scored the first three goals of the contest, the Thunder fought back to within 4-3 with 22:46 to play in the first half. Mammel and Hunter Johnson (Millbury, Ohio/Lake) scored the first two Thunder goals to pull within 3-2, before a goal by Greenfield restored a two-goal advantage. Johnson had two goals in the game for the Thunder.
Gast answered to cut the deficit back to one. The goal gave Gast her 50th-career point. From there, the Dutch took over as they outscored Trine 10-4 the rest of the half. Greenfield scored three of those goals, while Sabourin added a pair of tallies. Trine would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
Ryleigh Gordon (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) made her presence felt with a pair of goals in her return to the lineup. It was the freshman's first-career multi-goal effort.
The Thunder honored seniors Darcy Little (Williamsburg, Ohio/Williamsburg), Mary Lang (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) and Lauren Hood (Austintown, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) prior to the final home game of their Trine careers. Little notched two assists in the game. Hood picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers, while Lang added one ground ball.
Trine concludes the season Thursday when they travel to Adrian for a 7:00 p.m. game.
