ANGOLA, IND. -- Trine University football players Xaine Kirby (Sweetser, Ind./Eastbrook) and Angel Sanchez (Valparaiso, Ind./Portage) have been both selected to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Players of the Week and to the D3football.com "Team of the Week."
Both players helped lead Trine to a 33-23 win against Adrian (Mich.) College last Saturday (Mar. 27) at Zollner Athletic Stadium.
Kirby rushed for a game and career-high 166 yards against the Bulldogs which was also Kirby's second 100-yard rushing game of the season. His first came against the very same Adrian team in which the Thunder beat the Bulldogs, 44-27, in the season opener that saw him run for a then career-high 141 yards. On Saturday, Kirby averaged 7.5 yards per carry and scored twice.
Sanchez helped seal the victory for Trine by stepping in front of a Adrian pass in the Bulldogs' last effort of the game to score a potential go-ahead score and ran it back 54 yards for a touchdown. Additionally, Sanchez added six tackles (all solo stops) in the game.
Trine will host Alma (Mich.) College in the home finale on Saturday, Apr. 3 at Zollner Stadium in Angola. The MIAA contest is set to kickoff at 1 p.m.
