GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team was stifled by their hosts from Calvin University, dropping the contest 14-6.
The Knights scored the first three goals of the game over the course of 12 minutes.
With under 17 minutes remaining in the first half, the Thunder finally found the back of the net themselves. Freshman Nikki Hibler (West Lafayette, Ind. / Harrison) scored the goal. A few minutes later the team pulled back within a goal with a shot from junior Chloe Vruno (Geneva, Ill. / St. Francis).
Following the 3-2 score, Calvin pulled away from Trine scoring the next five goals of the half. Trine's Ella Dougherty (Lowell, Mich. / Lowell) finished off the scoring in the period to bring the halftime score to 8-3.
Trine came up with three goals in the second half as well while the Knights held off any comeback with six goals of their own bringing the final score to 14-6.
All told six different Trine players came away with a goal. In addition to Vruno, Hibler and Dougherty, senior Kristin John (South Bend, Ind. / St. Joe's), senior Kristen Nguyen (Locust Grove, Ga. / Luella) and junior Liv Ghent (Byron Center, Mich. / Caledonia) each tallied goals.
The Thunder fall to 4-3 overall following the loss. They will begin Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play when they travel to face Albion College on Wednesday, March 24 at 7 p.m.
