ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trine University High Voltage Dance Team finished as runners-up during their first appearance to the Dance Team Union (DTU) College Classic National Championship, held in Orlando this past weekend, April 12-14.
"When our choreographer, Anthony Maneri, sent me the song choice I was a little hesitant at first. He wanted our team to perform to 'Greedy' by Tate McRae. If you have heard this song, hip-hop is not the first thing that comes to mind," explained head coach Christina Richardville, "However, Anthony had the song revamped into a hip-hop version. That, with the technical elements, tricks, and use of musicality helped our team create something special and unique to put on the stage."
The team turned in a performance worth 88.8 points on the final day of the Division III Hip Hop competition to finish in second place. High Voltage finished just 0.3 of a point behind Stevenson University, who took home the national title in the division.
"We knew we were taking a routine that was different and risky and honestly, it paid off. Yes we would've loved to bring home the national championship but at the end of the day it wasn't about that," continued Richardville, "I think back to my experience ten years ago when I competed on this team for the first time. I wanted nothing more than for them to experience the pride and accomplishment that comes with that final performance. This team worked hard for each other every practice all season long. They made so many improvements and the routine they performed on finals day hit every element it needed to. At the end of the day, you must be proud of what you left on that stage and know you couldn't have done it any better. That's exactly what they did!"
"Taking a team to Nationals for the first year as a collegiate coach and being so successful made me nothing but proud of this program," finished Richardville, "We are determined for next season and hungry for that national title!"
