ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University acrobatics and tumbling team split the day as they hosted a pair of opponents for a tri-meet inside of Hershey Hall. The team comfortably defeated Adrian College 246.355-131.400 while coming up just short of Notre Dame College who scored 249.900.
The final score for the Thunder the third best showing in program history and was nearly enough for the sweep of the day, with the match ultimately decided in the final event.
Trine opened the day with a solid showing in the Compulsory Event, finishing with a score of 31.35. Their best scores came in the pyramid heat with an 8.95 and the toss heat with a 9.30. They trailed the Falcons who scored 35.05 in the event.
The team cut into the deficit during the Acro Event, scoring 25.75 points, 1.3 more than the closest visitor. The score was built on the fifth best showing in the 7-element heat with a 9.20 score. They were above eight in all three heats.
The Pyramid Event went to the Falcons but only by the slimmest of margins with the Thunder scoring a 28.40, the sixth best showing in program history. The team tied a program record with a 9.80 in the open heat while posting a second-best score in the synchronized heat with a 9.55. They were also above a nine in the inversion heat.
At halftime Trine trailed by just 1.1 points, with the scores sitting at 70.55 for the Bulldogs, 85.50 for the Thunder and 86.60 for the Falcons.
Trine and Notre Dame tied in the Toss Event, each posting a score of 25.90, which was the second best showing in program history for the Thunder. The team had a second best showing in the synchronized heat with an 8.45 and a third-best showing in the 450 salto heat with an 8.90. They posted a solid 8.55 in the open heat to finish the event.
The Thunder posted their second-best Tumbling Event score to cut into the Notre Dame lead further, winning the event 47.425-47.300. Trine posted a new record in the duo pass with an 8.45 and then had top-five performances in the aerial pass with an 8.625 and the open pass with an 8.925.
After the event, Trine trailed Notre Dame by just .975 of a point with the Team Event easily set to determine the outcome of the match. The Thunder turned in the fourth best score in program history with an 87.53, but it wasn't enough with the Falcons pulling away with a 90.10.
Trine finishes the day 3-2. They will host their final home event of the season on Sunday, March 24 at 12 p.m. They will host Concordia University Wisconsin for the day, a rematch of the first win of the season for the Thunder.
