ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team picked up their second win of the season with a dominating performance against visiting Heidelberg University. Junior Collin Custer led the way for the team offensively as they finished the day with a 13-3 victory.
Custer opened the scoring in the contest, finding the back of the net in the second minute of the contest. Junior Klein Burkholder and senior Noah Markus added a goal each over the remainder of the first period to build a 3-0 lead for the team.
The Student Princes ran into penalty trouble in the beginning of the second quarter and the Thunder made them pay for the mistakes. The team started the period with three man-up goals in the first four minutes. Freshman Peter Piccillo scored two of the goals while Custer assisted on two and scored the other.
Freshman Jackson Bell scored the next goal for the team with just under nine minutes remaining in the period, followed by a goal from senior Andrew Douglas. Burkholder finished the off the scoring in the half with his second goal.
Piccillo had a monster of a second quarter. In addition to his two goals he assisted on two more to finish with four points. Custer finished his night in the second quarter as well amassing two goals and three assists to lead the team.
With a 9-0 lead to start the second half, the Thunder began to work their backups into the game. A few starters eased the transition with Douglas scoring the first goal of the half and then assisting on the second. Sophomore Charlie Anderson scored his first goal of the night and recorded his second assist of the game.
Sophomore Patrick Doyle scored the final goal of the third giving the team a 12-0 lead for the final period of the day. Freshman Will Gonia opened the fourth quarter with a goal to give the team their largest lead of the day at 13-0.
Heidelberg scored the final three goals of the game to make the final score 13-3.
Junior Nick DiPaolo played the first half in net and finished the game with two saves and the win.
Trine improves to 2-0 following the lopsided victory. They will continue their season when they travel to face Spaulding University on Saturday, March 4. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.
