ANGOLA, Ind. – Record scoring paves way for Trine University men's lacrosse in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener against visiting Alma College. The team won 30-4, setting new program benchmarks in goals and points while tying the previous record for assists.
The scoring records came in 2011 when the team defeated Hanover College by scoring 29 goals and 17 assists. Tonight, the Thunder posted 30 goals with 17 assists for a total of 46 points.
The home team scored the first 13 goals of the game before ultimately taking a 14-1 lead into halftime. Noah Markus opened the scoring in the third minute of the first period. Also scoring in that period were Peter Piccillo, Kramer Zastrow, JJ Boos, Will Gonia and Mason Kaufmann. The final goal, scored by Kaufmann, was impressive as the long stick took a groundball after a turnover from midfield by himself.
Patrick Doyle opened the scoring in the second period as the Thunder posted seven more goals. Boos added his third goal of the game while Aidan Kubiak, Riley Fischer, Justin Scheberle and Mitchell Voglewede each tallied their firsts.
The offense found a different gear in the third period, posting ten goals to build their lead to 24-2. Piccillo was the catalyst of the explosion with an impressive seven points in the period, including four goals and three assists. He assisted on Markus's opening goal of the half. He then turned a tremendous individual effort of the second goal. He began by breaking a Scots stick while causing a turnover before recording his own groundball and the unassisted goal, all in the span of seconds.
Gonia was another bright spot in the quarter scoring four goals of his own. Charlie Anderson rounded out the scoring with his first goal of the day.
The Thunder slowed in the final period but still added six more goals to finish with the 30-4 victory. Voglewede, Zastrow and Fischer each added goals while Aiden Theobald and Jackson Bell got their firsts.
Piccillo led the team with nine points including five goals and four assists in the game. Gonia joined him as the other top goal scorer with five of his own. Zastrow led the team with five assists and finished second with seven points.
Eli Pfotenhauer led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers, while Jack Konicek led the team with seven ground balls with Zachary Norris finishing with six and Zastrow adding five. Konicek also led the way with 16 faceoff wins.
The Thunder improve to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play after the lopsided victory. They will continue their season when they travel to face Albion College on Saturday, April 13. That game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
