HANOVER, Ind. – After a close first half, the Trine University men's lacrosse team dominated the second half to defeat Hanover College 15-3.
The Panthers held the lead after the first five minutes of play, scoring two goals to the Thunder's one. Kramer Zastrow had the lone goal during the stretch. Trine finished the quarter with two straight goals in the final three minutes. Patrick Doyle and Will Gonia both scored while Peter Piccillo recorded a pair of assists.
Neither team scored in the second period with the 3-2 score holding into halftime.
Trine started a run in the third, scoring seven goals and allowing just one to build a 10-3 lead for the start of the fourth quarter. Six different members of the team scored in the period, with Aiden Theobald becoming the only member of the team to score two.
Noah Markus opened the scoring in the first minute of the half followed by Charlie Anderson just over a minute later. After five minutes of scoreless lacrosse, Riley Fischer scored with the team up a man before Zastrow added his second of the game. The Panthers scored their final goal of the game with just under five minutes remaining in the period. Theobald scored twice, with just ten seconds of gametime between goals, in the 12th minute of the quarter. Justin Scheberle scored the final goal of the period.
Trine added five more goals in the fourth quarter to build to their 15-3 victory. Piccillo opened the scoring with an assist by Mason Kaufmann. Markus, Zastrow and Gonia each added to their totals in the next four minutes before JJ Boos finished the scoring in the waning moments of regulation.
Nick DiPaolo anchored the defensive effort from the goal with six saves in the contest. Mason Levin turned in four caused turnovers to lead the team, while Jack Konicek led the team with 12 groundballs, most coming from his 14 faceoff wins.
The Thunder improve to 6-5 overall after the win. The team will enter Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) competition for their next game. They host Alma College on Tuesday, April 9 for a 7 p.m. contest.
