BLUFFTON, Ohio-- Trine extended its winning-streak to nine games as the Thunder swept Bluffton in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Bluffton Field.
Eighth-ranked Trine earned a 7-4 victory in game one before breaking out the bats in a big way to earn the 14-4 victory in five innings in game two. Kaitlyn Clark (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Wilson Central) homered as part of a four-hit day and knocked in four runs. Jamie Schnarr (Kettering, Ohio/Kettering) picked up three hits and drove home five runs. Freshman Mollie Lovasko (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) picked up her first collegiate victory in relief in game two. Trine improved to 14-1 on the season. Bluffton's record is now an even 7-7.
Game One: Trine 7, Bluffton 4
Clutch hitting by Clark and timely hitting from the rest of the Thunder lineup led Trine to the game one victory.
The two teams traded single runs in the first and third innings before Clark's first big hit gave the Thunder the lead for good. Leah Hall (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) singled to put two on with one out in the inning. Clark followed with her second homer of the season, launching the three-run shot to left to give Trine a 5-2 lead.
An RBI-double in the sixth by Clark scored Searles to make the score 6-2. The Beavers fought back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut their deficit to two. Josie McElroy came in to score on an error and a bunt single by Brittany Baker scored another run.
A two-out rally in the seventh produced an insurance run for Trine. Kendra Marshall (Leesburg, Ind./Warsaw) doubled down the left field line and Rachel Harris (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover) followed with a single through the middle for the final 7-4 margin.
McElroy added an RBI-single and Ariana Muffo hit a solo homer for Bluffton in the early innings.
Justine Robles (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) pitched the complete game to earn the victory. The junior allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out to improve her record to 7-1 on the season.
Game Two: Trine 14, Bluffton 4 (5)
The Thunder bats struck in bunches with two five-run innings to help pace the victory.
Schnarr and Hall each hit three-run homers as part of big innings. Schnarr's three-run bomb got the Thunder off and running to put TU up 3-0 in the first. Hall hit an absolute no-doubter to center field as part of a five-run fourth that pushed the Trine lead to double-digits.
Schnarr later added an RBI-double in a five-run second inning that pushed the Trine lead to 8-0. Kaylee Fox (Vermilion, Ohio/Edison), Amy Newell (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) and Marshall each added RBIs in the inning.
Rachell Noble (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central) took advantage of another start behind the plate with a two-run double.
Most of Bluffton's offense came in a three-run second. Jessica Madzia hit a two-run homer and Tessa Grooms added an RBI-single. Madzia also picked up an RBI-groundout in the fourth.
Lovasko worked 3.1 innings in relief to earn her first-career victory as a member of the Thunder. The freshman surrendered an earned run on two hits and struck out one.
Freshman Dani Kirchner (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) picked up her first career hit in the game for the Thunder.
Trine will host John Carroll this Sunday, Mar. 22 at 1 p.m. in the opener at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.
