GLOUCESTER, Mass. – The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) has released its fourth annual Krampade All American Scholar listings for the 2019-20 season. Both the men's and women's Trine University hockey programs had strong representation on the list.
Both teams finished well into the double digits of honorees. The women finished with 15 scholars while the men came away with 11.
Corey Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) becomes the first men's player to earn the award three years in a row, the only player to do so this season. Five members of the team came up with their second appearance on the list. Senior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) gained the honor after missing out last year, while juniors Aaron Brickman (St. Louis, Mo.), Ben Lau (Prospect, Ky.), Blake Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) and sophomore Brandon Krumpschmid (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each repeat from a year ago.
Rounding out the group were five skaters making their first appearance. Juniors Max Dicicco (Howell, Mich.), Chris Garrity (Stafford, Va.) and Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) joined freshmen Brett Piper (Cartier, Manitoba) and Brett Tierney (West Chicago, Ill.) in making their debut.
The women returned eight honorees from a year ago. Senior Katie Plyer (Layton, Utah) joined juniors Hannah Nelson (Libertyville, Ill.), Jade Pandres (Eagle River, Alaska), Kirsten Vandenheuvel (Denfield, Ont.) and Sierra Westner (Saginaw, Mich.) as upperclassmen to accomplish the feat. Sophomores Emily Nettesheim (Hartland, Wis.), Natasha Strbiak (Renton, Wash.) and Brandi Wilson (Fenton, Mich.) also returned to the list.
Juniors Kailey Cameron (Nowthen, Minn.), Ryan Harth (Medinah, Ill.) and Emily Moore (London, Ont.) each made their debut. Joining them were sophomore Autumn Burgo (Caledonia, Mich.) and freshmen Grace Canty (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Sara Martino (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Makena Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska).
The "Krampade All American Scholars" award recognizes varsity ice hockey players who attained a 3.75 GPA for the fall semester and participated in 40% of their school's games. The names of 813 Division II-III men and women are being released today and their Division II-III counterparts will be announced in the coming weeks. A small number of waivers to the 40% participation requirement was granted due to injury or for back-up goaltenders.
"These are exceptional individuals," said AHCA executive director Joe Bertagna. "The sport demands a great deal from these athletes so it is a great statement they make, individually and collectively, with their ability to attain this level of academic achievement while contributing at the NCAA Division II and Division III level."
