HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) have announced their All-MIAA recipients for the 2023-24 men's basketball season. The Trine University men's basketball team saw five student-athletes honored for their on-court performance this year.
For the second time in his career, senior forward Emmanuel Megnanglo from Cotonou, Benin, has been named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. Megnanglo led the MIAA in blocks per game at 3.3 this season and helped push the program forward to a conference title with a 12-2 record against league opponents. He was also fourth in the conference individually in steals at 2.0 per game. Trine was atop the MIAA as a team in turnover margin (6.3), turnovers forced per game (19.3) and steals per game (13.0). The Thunder are also ranked inside the top ten in each of those categories nationally.
Cortez Garland, a senior point guard from Detroit, Michigan, received First Team All-MIAA status after leading the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game. Garland was the third highest scorer in the MIAA this season and paced a scoring offense that led the MIAA at 80.0 points per game and field goal percentage at 48.5%. Garland was also third in the conference in steals at 2.1 per game. It is the third time in his career that he has received All-MIAA accolades.
Fred Garland was able tabbed as a First Team All-MIAA student-athlete by the MIAA. The junior guard from Detroit, Michigan was the Thunder's second leading scorer at 13.4 points per game (sixth in MIAA). Percentagewise, Garland was the team's leading three-point shooter at 44.4% and was fifth in the conference in total field goal percentage at 52.9%. Garland was the team's leading assist man with 3.2 per game. This is the second time he has been named to an All-MIAA team.
Trine has a second three-time All-MIAA honoree in senior forward Brent Cox. The Kendallville, Indiana native was selected as a Second Team All-MIAA recipient and scored 12.2 points per game for the team this season (tenth in MIAA). He brought down an average of 5.7 rebounds per game as well. He shot 54.8% from the field on the year, a mark good for fourth in the conference.
Junior guard Aidan Smylie was a Second Team All-MIAA selection following a breakout season both on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. Smylie led the conference in steals with 3.0 per game and is ranked sixth in all of NCAA DIII in steals. The Franklin, Tennessee native had the fifth-highest three-point field goal percentage in the conference at 39.4%. Smylie contributed in other ways as well with 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
The Thunder begin postseason play with the Adrian College Bulldogs at home in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 23.
