ANDERSON, Ind. – It was back-to-back shutouts for the Trine University men's soccer team following a 2-0 victory at Anderson University on Saturday afternoon.
The Thunder improve their record to 5-3 through eight non-conference matches, while Anderson drops to 3-6 overall.
Right away, Trine was off and running offensively. In just the sixth minute, Tyler Murphy [Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central] put a shot on goal that was denied by the Ravens' keeper.
Luis Rodriguez [El Paso, Texas / Bel Air] did the same to an Anderson shot attempt in the 13th minute.
Brandon Murphy [Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central] and Trevor Towghi [Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern] tried to put shots into the back of the net, but failed to do so in the 33rd and 37th minutes.
After a scoreless first period of action, Francesco Mazzei [Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn] thought he had broken the tie, but to no avail as his shot hit the top crossbar.
Murphy accepted a penalty kick in the 76th minute to give Trine a 1-0 lead. Just one minute later, it was Murphy again off a feed from Brian Morris [Metamora, Mich. / Lapeer] to give the Thunder some insurance.
Trine outshot Anderson 9-7, 6-1 in shots on goal. Rodriguez and the defensive unit completed the shutout with the lone save coming in the first half.
Next up, it's a clash with NCAA Division I foe, the University of Notre Dame. Thar match will be in South Bend on Tuesday, September 28 at 7 pm.
