GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Sophomore Tyler Murphy (Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central) netted the lone goal of the match in the final minute of the first overtime sending the Trine University men's soccer team to their second straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Soccer Tournament Final.
The opening half of the contest saw both teams have even success offensively. Despite no goals being scored the Thunder tallied five shots while the Knights came up with seven. Both keepers would make a lone save in the period.
In the second half the nationally ranked team from Calvin appeared to be set to overpower Trine, outshooting them 10-6, but more importantly they started to put those shots on goal. Sophomore Troy Saylor (Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia) was up to the task in net, as he would turn aside all four shots on goal including a penalty kick opportunity.
Regulation ended scoreless and the teams headed to overtime, where both sides would again have offensive opportunities, but this time it was the Thunder who posted an edge. In the fifth minute of the period, Murphy recorded the first shot of overtime forcing a save from the opposition's keeper.
Then in the final minute of the first overtime period sophomore Francesco Mazzei (Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn) came up with the ball at midfield and fired a pass into the penalty area and past the final line of Calvin defense. Murphy beat his man to the ball and fired a shot by the diving keeper and into the bottom right corner of the net.
The Thunder advance to their second straight MIAA Tournament Final following the victory. Last spring the team faced off with Hope College coming up just short of a win by the score of 2-1 in overtime.
This season they will travel to face Kalamazoo College. The match will be played On Saturday, Nov. 6. The time of kickoff is yet to be determined.
