ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University men's soccer team responded to visiting Adrian College's opening goal by scoring three straight to earn the 3-1 victory.
After 30 minutes of scoreless play, the Bulldogs broke the deadlock to take a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder were quick to respond. In the 33rd minute freshman Will Burba (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati La Salle) and sophomore Tyler Murphy (Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central) both scrambled for a loose ball in the goal area. After a failed attempt by the keeper to settle the ball, Murphy recovered it and fired the ball home for his 11th goal of the season.
Another two minutes later, Trine took their first lead of the game. Sophomore Francesco Mazzei (Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn) tallied the goal, which would end up being the game winner, with senior Brian Morris (Metamora, Mich. / Lapeer) adding an assist.
The final ten minutes of the half were uneventful and the Thunder entered intermission leading 2-1.
For much of the second half the contest was a back and forth affair, both teams pressuring into the offensive zone. The Thunder however continued to record quality attempts, while the Bulldogs were only able to force a lone save, though they did force tough defensive plays from Trine.
The Thunder finally broke through again in the 82nd minute of the contest. Senior Trevor Towghi (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) started the play by firing a blistering shot off the left goal post. The rebound came out wide and freshman Luke Kearns (Dearborn, Mich. / Dearborn) was able to fire his shot into the back of the net. Kearns first goal of the season gave the team a 3-1 lead.
That score would go final less than eight minutes later.
The Thunder improve to 2-2-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play and 7-7-1 overall following the victory.
They will continue their season when they travel to face Albion College on Saturday, Oct. 23. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
