ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University men's soccer team clinched a home match in the postseason with a 3-1 victory at Albion College Saturday. Tyler Murphy [Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central] was able to find the back of the net twice in the win, his 12th and 13th goals of the season and Joey Donovan [Aurora, Ill. / Metea Valley] added a third just before full time.
Trine advances to 8-7-1, 3-2-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action with the win, and the loss drops Albion to 4-7-2 and 2-3-1. The seeding for the postseason will depend on results from later matches, but the Thunder can drop no lower than the number four seed in the league table.
The first score by Murphy came at the 16-minute mark, the first shot of the game for the Thunder. Ethan Lewis [Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield] was credited with the assist.
Will Burba [Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati La Salle] and Brian Morris [Metamora, Mich. / Lapeer] took shots in the 41st minute to try to extend the lead, but both missed the mark. Alhusain Yahya [Melvindale, Mich. / Melvindale] chipped in with a shot attempt as well one minute later.
In just the 48th minute, Murphy connected on his second goal of the match, this time the assist to Connor Malmquist [Valparaiso, Ind. / Morgan Township].
That score would remain until the 84th minute when Donovan cashed in for the third time this season. Murphy was there for the assist, his fifth point of the match.
The shutout would be broken after Troy Saylor [Caledonia, Mich. / Caledonia] notched a save on a penalty kick, but the rebound would trickle home to cut the Briton deficit to 3-1. Saylor tallied one more save in the 88th minute to close the game.
In total, Albion took nine shots to Trine's eight, but the Thunder were able to put six shots on goal, compared to three for the Britons in the victory.
The regular season finale for Trine will be on Wednesday, October 27 when the Thunder venture to Alma College for a 3:30 pm kick.
