ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University men's indoor track and field team edged out a victory at the annual Sean Brady/Keith Turner Open at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center in Angola, Ind.
The Thunder edged out their nearest opponent by a point and ended the meet with a total of 165 team points. Grace College was second at 164 points and St. Francis (Ind.) University was third with 84 points.
Three Trine runners qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash with the top mark of the three going to sophomore Josh Davis (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) who ran a time of 7.04 seconds.
Junior Derek Miller (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) captured the 3000-meter run and was one of three runners to finish in the top five. Miller posted a winning time of 8:48.80 and was followed by senior Vilis Vuskalns (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove) who placed second (8:54.66) and junior Jack Beakas (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) was fourth (9:07.08).
Freshman Jake Gladieux (Oregon, Ohio/Whitmer) also found himself in the winner's circle by recording the top overall time in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.59 seconds. He also finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.42 seconds and was accompanied by fellow freshman (Kyran Pearson (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) in the top-five with a fourth place effort of 23.55 seconds.
Other top finishes included a third-place showing by freshman Connor Kissinger (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) who ran a time of 54.23 seconds in the 400-meter dash which was good enough for third place. Freshman Skyler Schrope (Charlottesville, Ind./Eastern Hancock) was fourth in the 800-meter run after crossing the finish line in a mark of 2:03.03 and junior Neil O'Brien (Whiteland, Ind./Roncalli) rounded out the high finishes with a fourth-place mark of 4:36.85 in the mile run.
In the field events, freshman Ben Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) won the long jump with a leap of 22' 1.00". He was also joined by sophomore Noah McClellan (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) who was third following a best effort of 20' 5.75."
McClellan also went on to compete in the triple jump and finished as the runner-up in the event with a best distance of 40' 10.5."
In the weight throw, senior Mitchell Martin (Bowling Green, Ohio) was second after a throw of 52' 2.5."
Junior Alex Sliter (Bryan, Ohio/Fairview) and senior Skyler Dunckley (Cedar, Mich./Traverse City West) completed the list of the top efforts on the day with Sliter placing third in the pole vault (11' 5.75") and Dunckley fourth in the shot put (45' 0.5").
Up next for the Thunder will be the annual Don & Riley Zimmer Classic next Saturday (Jan. 18) at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center. The first events are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
