KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The 13th ranked Trine University softball team swept their opening day of the season as they defeated Concordia (IL) 15-0 and Franklin 8-0.
The Thunder dug the long ball in game one as they hit five home runs in the game. Senior Andi Gasco (Levering, Mich./Petoskey) hit a pair, a three-run and two-run shot. Her sister, sophomore Carly Searles (Levering, Mich./Petoskey), junior Haleigh Daniels (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) and senior Sarah Belote (Bronson, Mich./Bronson) also belted home runs for the Thunder.
Sophomore pitcher Bree Fuller (Hubbardston, Mich./Fulton) allowed just one hit in the game, which came to the leadoff batter in the bottom of the fifth. Fuller finished with 11 strikeouts in the game.
In game two, the Thunder scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single from Searles. Trine would score three runs in the third off a pair of Franklin errors. In the fourth, freshman Kaitlyn Clark (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Wilson Central) hit her first career homer, a three-run shot to left field.
Gasco earned her first win of the season, striking out nine batters and walking none while surrendering just two hits.
