ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine men's soccer team received their first MIAA win in upset fashion against #17 ranked Hope 2-0. The Thunder came out from the start wanting to upset the Dutchmen and their play showed it. Although the Thunder were outshot 20-9, the game remained scoreless after the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Stewart (Rochester Hills, Mich/Rochester) finished with seven saves on the day and no goals allowed.
In the second half, each team continued to take shots at each other but none of them seemed to be successful. In the 67th minute, just seconds after multiple Hope substitutions, Bill Wilson (Mason, Mich./Mason) drives down the field and then taps it to Kenny Rappuhn (Grand Blanc, Mich./Goodrich) as he one touches it passed the Hope goalkeeper for the first goal of the day. This was the first goal scored at home for the Thunder since they played Alma on the 17th of September.
The Thunder weren't quite finished. With just shy of four minutes left in the game, the Thunder regained possession after a corner kick from Hope's Jason Muller. Kenny Rappuhn (Grand Blanc, Mich./Goodrich) fights for the air ball and heads it downfield for wide open Bill Wilson (Mason, Mich./Mason) who then took on Hope's goalkeeper one on one and blasted it into the top right corner for the Thunder's second goal of the day. The Thunder finished the game with a 2-0 victory over Hope in shutout form.
This is the Thunder's first conference win bringing them to (3-11, 1-9) overall. The Thunder looks to host Albion on October 26th at 2:30 p.m. for their next conference match-up.
