BUFFALO, N.Y. - In their first game under new head coach Steve Mix, the Trine University women’s basketball team took home the win in a close 64-58 victory over Alvernia University out of Pennsylvania. The Thunder advance to the championship game of the Betty Abgott Invitational where they will face host Buffalo State who defeated Alfred 70-48 at 2:00 p.m. on November 17.
Trine led 31-27 at the half, despite shooting 30.6 percent from the floor compared to 35.5 percent by the Crusaders. The first half was a seesaw battle before the Thunder scored the final two buckets of the half to take the lead into the break.
The Thunder maintained their lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as eight.
Senior Sydney Spragg (Reading, Mich./Reading) led Trine with 15 points on the night while pulling down nine boards. Sophomore Kelsey Henselmeier (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) added in 13 points to go along with a game-high six assists and grabbing six rebounds. Fellow sophomore Kayla Dunn (Larwill, Ind./Columbia City) also added in 10 points and five rebounds. Senior Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, Ind./Southern Wells) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while also blocking three shots and adding in eight points.
