ANGOLA, Ind. – In a game pushed back due to snowy conditions, the Trine University women's basketball team secured a 40-point victory 82-42 over Kalamazoo College. The Thunder are now 12-4 overall and 6-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action while the Hornets of Kalamazoo fall to 3-13 and are winless at 0-7 in league play.
Trine was able to shoot better at all levels including from the field (51.8% to 30.4%), from three (47.4% to 23.8%) and from the free throw line (78.9% to 75.0%). The Thunder also held a firm advantage in rebounds (39-22) and paint points (38-16). 52 points on the night came from the Trine bench unit.
The Thunder won the first quarter 22-9 after starting the game on a 13-1 scoring run. Abby Sanner had assists on three Trine makes en route to a team-high five. The first field goal for the Hornets came with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter. Allie Walther added four points late in the frame for the Thunder off the bench.
The second quarter was more of the same in favor of the home squad at 27-8 to take a 49-17 lead into halftime. Alexis Snodgrass netted the team's first points in the second off of a post move and she would bury a shot from deep as well two possessions later. The first 15 points of the second belonged to Trine, with Sidney Wagner adding on to her team high. Four three-point plays by Allison Capouch, Sydney Horton and Walther ballooned the lead to 32 at halftime.
Once again, it was a scoring run for the Thunder to start a period, this time a 7-0 run sparked by Katie Tate. Sanner went to work inside in the middle stages of the third quarter and Capouch netted six more points late in the period to make it 66-28.
Tiana Maat and Kearston Stout etched their names in the scoring column early in the fourth quarter and Anna Grim was aggressive later on to score on consecutive possessions. A Stout three-point make would conclude an 82-42 win for Trine.
Wagner led the team in scoring at 14 points, but Capouch (12 points) and Walther (11 points) each reached double figures off the bench. Wagner also was the team leader with five rebounds, however Sanner, Snodgrass and Olivia Marks each added four. Behind Sanner's team-high five assists was Horton with four.
