ANGOLA, Ind. – In the most recent rankings distributed by D3hoops.com, the Trine University women's basketball team moved up three spots to #17, the same spot where the Thunder began the 2023-24 season. The team is 14th in the latest Coaches Poll by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Trine opened the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) slate with a pair of victories, the first coming at Calvin University and the second versus Albion College. The Thunder defeated the Knights by a score of 67-50 on Wednesday after holding Calvin to 32.7% (18-for-55) and topped the Britons 66-53 after Albion tied the game in the third quarter.
The women's basketball teams have started and finished games strong thus far in 2023-24. Trine has outscored their opponents 109-75 in the first quarter and 105-77 in the fourth quarter to get them to their 5-1 overall record.
Junior guard Sidney Wagner averaged 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in the team's MIAA victories, including 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in Saturday's win against Albion. She has been consistent in scoring 16-19 points in each of the team's first five contests.
Sophomore guard Allie Walther reached double figures for the first time this year with 10 points against the Britons. Senior guard Chelsi Giesige got the nod in the team's starting lineup for the first time in her career in the team's most recent game and played 19 minutes, a new career high.
Conference play continues on Saturday, December 9 for a 1 p.m. home game against Saint Mary's College.
