KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Trine University women's basketball team had a historic performance on Saturday afternoon in the team's 84-16 victory at Kalamazoo College. It is tied for the fewest amount of points given up in a game in Trine's NCAA DIII era. The Thunder also allowed 16 points to Illinois Tech on February 13, 2016.
#11 Trine now has a 13-3 overall record and 7-0 mark in Michigan Intercollegiate (MIAA) play with the 68-point margin of victory. The Hornets remain winless this season at 0-16 and 0-7 in league action.
The team held Kalamazoo to 4-of-33 (12.1%) shooting and they were empty on 11 attempts from beyond the arc. The Thunder took advantage of 38 Hornet turnovers and turned those into 42 points. Trine defenders had a total of 27 steals in the game, the second-most in program history and the most in an NCAA DIII game. Sidney Wagner led the way with six steals and Kearston Stout had five off the bench.
Kalamazoo was held without a made field goal in the first quarter as Trine jumped in front by a tally of 22-1. The Thunder scored the first 18 points of the game, led by Wagner and Abby Sanner with seven points apiece. Jada Rhonehouse buried a pair of free throw attempts to wrap up the first period for the team and propelled them into the second quarter as well.
Makayla Ardis found Alyssa Argyle for three to begin the second that led to 10 consecutive points for Trine before Kalamazoo scored once again. Sophie Sloneker and Addison Hutson got their first points in the game to help outscore their opponents 20-4 in the period to go up 42-5 at halftime.
Katie Sloneker had back-to-back baskets on the opening possessions of the second half and Ardis went 3-for-3 from downtown in the period to extend the lead. Through three periods, the Thunder held a 64-10 advantage.
The fourth quarter saw all 20 points come from student-athletes off the bench. Alexis Snodgrass, Erin Sherwood, Kearston Stout and Macayla McGowan played all 10 minutes and all got in the scoring column. Snodgrass totaled eight points to tie her career-high to reach the 84-16 final.
Ardis paced the offense with 17 points and Wagner contributed with 16. Sanner had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The team made more than half of their field goal attempts at 30-for-58 (51.7%).
The next game for the Trine women's basketball team will be at home on Wednesday, January 18 versus Albion College. The 11-4 Britons are coming off a victory against the fifth-ranked Hope College Flying Dutch. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
