ALMA, Mich. – The Trine University women's tennis team came up just short of their hosts from Alma College, falling by the score of 5-4.
The Thunder picked up two of the three doubles matches to start the day. Elina Locane and Alexis Maloney needed a tiebreaker but came out ahead with the score of 8-7 (7-3) in the No. 1 match. Emilee Bassett and Haley Straub won the No. 2 match by the score of 8-5.
Trine won just two of the singles matches while falling in a third set in two more to come to the final score of 5-4. Maloney won the first set of the No. 3 match before falling with scores of 6-3, 0-6, 2-6. Straub also took the first set before falling with scores of 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 in the No. 4 match.
Locane recorded the most convincing of the wins for the team in the No. 1 match with scores of 6-1, 6-2. Bassett scored the last win of the day for the team with a 7-5, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 match.
The Thunder fall to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play following the tight loss. They will travel to face Saint Mary's College on Tuesday, April 16 for their next match. The contest is set to start at 4 p.m.
