BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Trine University men's golf team tied Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Hope College on the team leaderboard at the Olivet Lou Collins Invite. Both teams completed 36 holes at Bedford Valley with a score of 599, with the Thunder shooting a tournament-low round of 297 (tied with Calvin University) on Saturday.
The tie was determined by looking at the fifth scoring member's score, where Hope edged Trine by six strokes. Therefore, the Thunder were named runner-ups as a team.
Sophomore Mark Civanich [Valparaiso, Ind. / Valparaiso] had the lowest round of the day for Trine with an even-par 72. He finished the event with a 148 (76-72), good for fifth place. Civanich drained four birdies on the front nine and led the Thunder with five on the day.
Brogan Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton] matched his first round with a day two 74 and tied Civanich in fifth on the leaderboard at 148 (74-74). Brockie was 2-under after making the turn after converting birdies on holes 10, 12 and 16. Brockie earned All-Tournament honors with his top-5 finish via tiebreaker.
Junior Mitch Lowney [Fenton, Mich. / Clarkston Everest] took three strokes off his first day's score and wrapped up play at 151 (77-74). Lowney showed consistency throughout the afternoon with a team-high 12 pars in the second round.
Just one stroke back was Jack Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton] with a 152 (75-77). Brockie hit a pair of birdies on both par-5 holes on the front nine.
The fifth member of the Thunder team was Colin Crumrine [Newark, Ohio / Newark Catholic]. Crumrine went 162 (81-81) in his first collegiate tournament. The freshman continued to gain valuable experience on the course and scored 10 pars on the day.
Individual player Nick Phillips [Yorktown, Ind. / Mincie Central] picked up two spots on Saturday and completed his 36 holes at 164 (83-81).
Trine men's golf begins conference play in their next event at the MIAA Jamboree #1 at Albion College on September 7.
