ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's golf team was at home for the first time in the fall 2022 season on Tuesday when the Thunder hosted the Ken Venturi Invitational at Zollner Golf Course. Trine finished third in the event as a team, overcoming a weather delay lasting almost one hour.
Ohio Wesleyan University won the 2022 Ken Venturi Invitational with a combined score of 288. Behind them were Huntington University at 292 and the Thunder at 294. John Catanzarite for the Battling Bishops was the individual medalist with a 5-under round of 66.
Mitch Lowney was the low man for Trine with a score of 70. He went 1-under on the day after hitting for birdie on three of the final four holes. He led the team with five birdies overall. He was alone in second-place on the player leaderboard.
Freshman Carter Schnipke put together a solid round of 72 on the afternoon to garner a top-5 finish. His 1-over was highlighted by birdies on holes 3 and 18, but his consistency was on display throughout the round as he led the squad with 14 pars. He had a stretch of seven in a row spanning from holes 7-13.
Kyler Rod fired a 75 on Tuesday with one birdie on the par-5 seventh hole. He tied for 13th overall. Rod was even on the front nine. The pairing of Mark Civanich and Charlie Eriksen tied for 24th after shooting dueling 77s. Each of them finished with two birdies.
In total, 28 Trine men's golfers took the course, with a few putting together excellent rounds as well. Carter Rang tied for fifth-place overall with a 1-over 72. He hit for an eagle on the par-4 hole 12. Nick Coccaro, Wade Shafer and Ryan Gienger all wrapped up play with 3-over 74s to secure top-10 placements. All three had two birdies on their ledgers. Garrett James (75) and Colin Crumrine (76) each finished inside the top-20 as well. James and Jackson Williams each had an eagle on their cards to give the team three in the event.
Up next, the Thunder enter Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play on Monday, September 26. Trine travels to Wuskowhan Players Club in West Olive, Michigan to compete in the first MIAA Jamboree of the season, hosted by Hope College.
