ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's golf team won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Jamboree event at Zollner Golf Course on Saturday and made a leap in the conference standings.
Through two events, Trine is tied for second with Calvin University and sits just six strokes back from the leader Hope College.
The Thunder completed play at their home course with a score of 288, one stroke ahead of the second-place team, Calvin. The Knights had the individual champion of the event on their team, Sam Holland, with a four-under 67.
Jack Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton] tied for third place on the leaderboard with an even par 71. Brockie birdied three of his last four holes on the day to become a medalist.
Mark Civanich [Valparaiso, Ind. / Valparaiso] shot a 72 to finish in a tie for seventh place. He hit for birdie on the final three holes of the front nine and overcame a double bogey on 10 by going 1-under throughout his final eight holes of the day.
Tied with Civanich for seventh was Brogan Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton]. His 72 came from an up-and-down day where the freshman led the team in birdies with seven, and went 4-under on the back after a struggle on the front.
Mitch Lowney [Fenton, Mich. / Clarkston Everest] was one of three players to hit an eagle on the course Saturday. Lowney holed out on the par-4 4th hole from around 75 yards out on his way to a 73.
