NORTH MANCHESTER, IND.-- The Trine men's cross country team tied for first at the Manchester University Hokum Karem, held Friday night at Manchester University.
The Thunder and host Spartans tied with 12 points atop the team scores. Austin Ganger (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) and Adam Schaaf (Greentown, Ind./Eastern) combined for the first-place finish for Trine. The duo averaged a 5:04 mile pace over a total of eight miles. Each runner ran alternating one-mile circuits around the course, with each runner covering a distance of four miles total. Ganger's best split was an even 5:00 on his third mile. Schaaf ran a 5:01 pace on each of his first two miles. Runners grouped in pairs earned points for their respective teams, with each team's top three pairs of runners contributing to the overall team score.
Coming in third place overall was the freshman duo of Robert Lewis Duke (Greentown, Ind./Eastern) and Sean Brady (Monroe, Mich./Monroe). Competing in their first collegiate races, the pair combined for an average split of 5:10 per mile. Duke finished the race strong, coming in with a 4:50 split in his final mile.
Rounding out Trine's point-earners was the ninth-place overall team of Aaron Mast (Ligonier, Ind./West Noble) and Cody Verhey (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville). The runners combined for an average mile of 5:23. Verhey opened his Trine career with a 5:13 split, which accounted for the best mile between the two runners.
