FREELAND, MICH. -- Three members of the Trine University women's basketball team have been selected to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association All-Conference Teams that were released today (Tuesday, Mar. 9).
Trine ended the season with a 14-3 overall record and reached its fourth consecutive appearance in the MIAA Tournament title game and the fifth in the past six seasons.
Juniors Tara Bieniewicz (Chesterfield, Mich./Dakota) and Kayla Wildman (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) were both selected first-team and junior Kelsy Taylor (Louisville, Ky./New Albany) earned second-team honors. Both Bieniewicz and Wildman are repeat selections to the All-Conference Teams after earning first and second-team honors last season.
Bieniewicz led the Thunder in scoring with 10.8 points per game while shooting 40.4 percent (55-of-136) overall from the floor. The majority of her shot attempts came from behind the three-point line where she made a team-high 35 triples in a team-leading 85 attempts for a 41.2 shot percentage. Her three-pointers made and attempts totals also led the conference. Bieniewicz scored in double figures in 10 games with a seacon-high 19 points in her final game of the year against Hope (Mich.) College in the MIAA Tournament championship game. Additionally, Bieniewicz averaged 2.6 rebounds per game to go along with 24 assists and 14 steals defensively.
Wildman averaged 9.6 ppg. in conference games and 9.2 ppg. overall for the season to rank third on the team. In 15 games played, Wildman shot 36.4 percent (44-of-121) from the floor and finished second behind Bieniewicz in three-point shooting going 24-of-71 for 33.8 percent. Wildman also finished among the team leaders in free-throw shooting with 26 successful makes in 34 attempts (76.5 percent). She averaged 2.4 rpg. with 21 assists, 16 steals and was fourth on the team in blocked shots with eight.
Taylor wrapped up her junior season averaging 10.7 ppg. in MIAA games and 9.3 ppg. overall in 16 games which was the second highest on the team. She posted eight games of 10 or more points that included a career-high 20 points in a win against Alma (Mich.) College on Feb. 11 and had one double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Siena Heights (Mich.) University on Nov. 8. Taylor led Trine and was among the league leaders in rebounding at 5.7 boards a game and was second in blocks with 12. Additionally, Taylor added 16 assists and seven steals during the year.
