ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University men's golf team caputred the team championship at the Bill Gettig Match Play Invitational hosted by Trine at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.
The Trine "Blue" Team advanced to the championship round where it faced Lourdes (Ohio) University and defeated the Gray Wolves, 4-1. Individually, the Thunder won four out of the five matches. Junior Grant Brettnacher (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) defeated his opponent, 3&2, and sophomore Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) won his matchup by a final of 3&2.
Also winning matches were junior Joe LeSueur (Northfield Center, Ohio/Trinity) and freshman Jacob Black (Defiance, Ohio/Trinity). Both players defeated their opponents from Lourdes by a final of 8&6 to round out the team scoring.
Trine also put together another team comprised of juniors Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso), Nick Knowlton (Bridgman, Mich./Bridgman), sophomore Jeffrey Uhls (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville), freshman Keagan Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) and sophomore Adam Conkling (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead). The "White" team were ultimately defeated by Albion (Mich.) College in the consolation flight, but two players won their individual matches.
Knowlton came out the winner in his individual matchup, winning, 8&6. Uhls also captured a close match by a score of 3&2.
Trine will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, April 13) when it hosts the A.C. Eddy Invitational at Zollner Golf Course. The day is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Angola, Ind.
