JACKSON, MICH. -- The Trine University men's golf team continues its impressive play in the fall season with a runner-up finish at the Irish Hills Invitational hosted by Adrian (Mich.) College at the Grand Golf Club in Jackson, Mich.
Trine ended the two-day tournament with an overall team score of 600 strokes (304+296=600) to place second out of 13 total teams. Kenyon (Ohio) College captured the team championship with a total of 589 strokes (299+290=589). Ohio Wesleyan University rounded out the top three schools with 603 strokes (307+296=603).
All five the competitors for Trine eligible for the overall team score shot rounds in the 70s on the final day. Junior Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) had the improvement in score from round one and the final day of seven strokes and placed fifth on the team with a tournament total of 163 strokes (85+78=163).
Senior Grant Brettnacher (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) posted the lowest total for the Thunder at 146 strokes after firing individual rounds of 74 and 72 strokes. His overall score put him in sole possession of second place. Freshman Mitch Lowney (Fenton, Mich./Clarkston Everest) was second on the team, and finished in the top-10 overall, with a total score of 150 strokes (76+74=150).
Senior Nick Knowlton (Bridgman, Mich./Bridgman) was third with rounds of 76 and 75 strokes to have an overall score of 175 strokes and placed 12th. Senior Carlos Coeto (Bernardo, Mexico) shot a two-day total of 153 strokes (78+75=153) which was good enough to put him in 14th place among the tournament field.
Also competing for Trine was senior Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso). Mieske played as an individual and finished in a tie for 10th with rounds of 73 and 77 strokes for a cumulative total 150 strokes.
Trine will compete in the second Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association event of the fall next Saturday, Sept. 21 at the MIAA Jamboree #2 hosted by Alma (Mich.) College at Pine River Country Club in Alma, Mich. The one-day event is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
