FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Trine University men's hockey team came back from a third period deficit to force overtime but came up short of a win, losing 2-1 to Marian University.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net during the first two periods of action and they would enter the final period of regulation as they started the game, tied 0-0.
A big part of the score was freshman Shane Brancato (Lake Villa, Ill.) who tallied 21 saves through the first two periods. He would finish the contest with 35, despite recording the loss.
The Sabres struck fast in the third period coming up with the first goal of the game in just the second minute of play.
The Thunder were still trailing going into the final minute of play and pulled their goale in favor of an extra attacker. The move worked as sophomore Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) came up with the goal to tie the game with Brandon Krumpschmid (Grand Rapids, Mich.) adding the assist. The goal came with under 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
The 1-1 tie would last those final seconds and the teams would head to overtime. In that period the Sabres were the ones to come up with a last-second goal to win the game 2-1.
The Thunder fall to 3-7-1 overall following the loss. They will next take the ice when they host Adrian College on Friday, March 5. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
