ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University men's hockey team finished off their season series with Finlandia University with a lopsided 5-0 victory.
The Thunder scored their first goal in the eighth minute of play. Sophomore Jackson Clark (Fort Mill, S.C.) came up with the loose puck in the neutral zone and passed it ahead to classmate Jacob Berg (Plano, Texas) who netted his first goal of the season to give the team a 1-0 lead.
Then the team added to their lead in the final minute of the period. In the waning seconds of a power-play opportunity junior Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) passed the puck from the point to senior Hunter Payment (Monroe, Mich.) who wasted little time forwarding it along to the front of the net. There sophomore Thad Marcola (Almont, Mich.) was waiting to shoot the puck home.
The team added to their lead in the early minutes of the second period. Junior Brett Piper (Cartier, Manitoba) tallied the goal after a pair of quick passes gave him the opportunity. Marcola and freshman Tim Organ (Lambertville, Mich.) tallied assists.
Trine finished off the game with two more goals in the final period to finish with the 5-0 lead. Junior Justin Meers (St. Charles, Mo.) scored the first and Marcola finished off with his second goal of the game.
The Thunder dominated the game offensively outshooting the Lions 58-10 in the contest.
Despite not facing many shots, sophomore Elias Sandholm (Stockholm, Sweden) came up with his second shutout of the season and fifth win.
The team improves to 13-4 overall and 7-3 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. Trine is scheduled to travel to face MSOE in their next action. The first game of the weekend doubleheader is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 14.
