ANGOLA, Ind. -- Three different skaters scored as the Trine University men's hockey team got back on track defeating Chatham University 3-0. Sophomore Elias Sandholm (Stockholm, Sweden) picked up the first shutout and second win of his career in net.
Neither team scored in the first period, but the Thunder previewed their offensive prowess from the getgo, outshooting the opposition 11-3.
In the second period that shot disparity began to tell on the Cougar defense and when Trine was awarded a powerplay in the 13th minute of the period the dam would break.
The Thunder scored their first goal on that powerplay, one of only two extra man opportunities for Trine during the night. Sophomore Jackson Clark (Fort Mill, S.C) started the play from the point passing the puck to the top of the right faceoff circle. From there freshman Drew Welsch (Trenton, Mich.) forwarded it to the left circle where sophomore Chace McCardle (Southgate, Mich.) skated a few paces forward before putting the puck in the lower left corner of the net.
Just three minutes later Trine doubled their lead to 2-0. Jared Bowman (Calgary, Alberta) tied up the puck along the board just outside the offensive zone and was able to kick it out toward center ice where freshman Matt Bielinski (Buffalo, N.Y.) collected and moved into the offensive zone. Holding to the right side of the net he drew attention away from a trailing Zach VanCompernolle (Traverse City, Mich.) who entered the zone done the center. The junior received Bielinski's pass and put the puck into the left side of the net.
Three more minutes later and the Thunder would score their third goal of the period. After a missed shot by freshman Bobby Price (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) ended up behind the net, senior Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) was able to collect the puck and fire a pass to the right side of the net. From there junior Justin Meers (St. Charles, Mo.) moved the puck into the right faceoff circle before moving it back to Price who fired his shot from the left faceoff circle into the right side of the net.
During the scoring run by Trine, Sandholm also faced his toughest period. Mostly on the counterattack, the Cougars were able to put eight shots on net during the period, their highest total of the night. Sandholm held firm under the pressure while also showing off his puck handling skills outside of the crease, making a few nice passes in open ice. He would finish the game with the shutout and 14 saves.
The third period saw the Thunder outshoot the opposition again, this time 13-3, but the Chatham goalie, junior Ricardo Gonzalez, stood on his head to keep the team off the board. In total Gonzalez would finish with an impressive 32 saves, keeping the game relatively close despite plenty of good opportunities for Trine.
After a quick third period, lasting under 30-minutes of real time, the game would go final at 3-0, with the Thunder picking up their sixth win of the season. The victory breaks a two-game losing streak and lets the team improve to 6-3 overall.
Trine will return to the ice, once again at home, on Saturday, Nov. 27 when they host Buffalo State for a 5 p.m. contest.
