HANCOCK, Mich. – The Trine University men's hockey team tied the game in the third but were unable to complete the comeback falling overtime to Finlandia University by a score of 3-2.
The Lions scored the first two goals of the contest, the first in the sixth minute and the second in the 17th minute of the first period.
The Thunder responded with a last-second goal to pull back within one heading into the first intermission. Senior Henry Hearon (Chicago, Ill.) scored the goal, the first in his time at Trine. Junior Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) added the assist on the goal.
Finlandia held on to the 2-1 lead through the second period as both teams went scoreless.
In the fourth minute of the third period, the Thunder tied the game at two. Freshman forward Brett Piper (Cartier, Manitoba) scored the goal with classmate Justin Meers (St. Charles, Mo.) and sophomore Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) assisting.
The 2-2 tie held through the rest of regulation and the teams headed to overtime. In the fourth minute of the extra period, the Lions broke the tie, handing the Thunder a 3-2 defeat.
In goal for Trine, senior Brett Young finished the contest with 34 saves.
The Thunder fall to 8-8-1 overall and 6-5-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. They will return home to face Marian University on Friday, January 25. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
