HANCOCK, Mich. – The Trine University men's hockey team finished off their sweep of Finlandia University, earning three more points toward the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings. Unlike the battle of Friday night, the Thunder pulled away in the second game of the weekend finishing with a 5-0 victory.
Neither team scored during much of the first period. That finally changed in the 18th minute, when sophomore Tyler Fox found the back of the net. Junior Thad Marcola added an assist on the goal.
Trine built on the 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the second period, this time on the back of sophomore Drew Welsch's shot. Freshman Sean Henry and senior Brendan Prappas added assists on the goal, which ended up being the lone tally of the second period.
The Thunder pulled away in the final period of the day, scoring three goals to get to the final 5-0 score. Welsch came up with this second of the day while senior Justin Meers and freshman Sam Antenucci both added their lone goals of the night.
Freshman Kyle Kozma earned the first shutout of his young career in net. He finished with 13 saves while not allowing a goal.
The team improves to 11-5-1 overall and 6-4 in NCHA play following the weekend of competition. Trine will continue their season when they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering for another NCHA doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, January 13.
