MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Trine University men's hockey team knotted the contest in the third period, but gave up the golden goal in overtime to fall to their hosts from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) by the score of 4-3.
The Raiders scored the first goal of the contest in the third minute to take their first lead of the game at 1-0.
Then in the fifth minute the Thunder tied the contest at 1-1. Sophomore Jackson Clark (Fort Mill, S.C.) began the play by passing the puck into the offensive zone leading senior Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) into the zone where he collected the puck and passed it to the opposite side of the net. There freshman Bobby Price (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) made the goalie miss scoring his 14th goal of the season.
Just under two minutes later the team took a lead of their own. This time junior Brendan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) carried the puck the length of the ice and into the flat to the right of the goal. He fired a pass back across the face of the net to senior Brandon Krumpschmid (Grand Rapids, Mich.) who pushed it by the goalie to make the score 2-1.
MSOE scored the last goal of the period in the eighth minute when they received the first power play opportunity of the night. They retook the lead with the lone goal of the second period, again on a power play, making the score 3-2.
In the third minute of the final period, the Thunder applied offensive pressure. After a missed shot, junior Frank Trazzera (Keller, Texas) passed the puck from behind the net to the point where senior Hunter Payment (Monroe, Mich.) fired a long distance shot on goal. The rebound went just wide enough to allow Prappas to score the goal knotting the game at 3-3.
The tie would last through the final 17 minutes of regulation and the teams would head to overtime. In the final minute of the extra period the Raiders broke past the Thunder defense and scored the golden goal ending the game with the 4-3 victory.
The Thunder fall to 14-5 overall and 8-4 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA), but will retain one point from the overtime loss in the standings. The team is set to travel to face nationally ranked St. Norbert College in their next competition. The first game of a pair is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. ET.
